A Community Service Of PBI UMY : Teacher Empowerment Through Lesson Study Program
PBI UMY encourages the lecturers to conduct an community service progrmas to support educational field especially in Yogyakarta. One of the community service of PBI UMY is teacher empowerment through lesson study which was initiated and led by Eko Purwanti, Ph.D. and Evi Puspitasari, S.Pd., M.Hum. Lesson study is an activity when teachers collaborate to make a lesson plan, implement and observe the lesson plan implementation, and do the reflection. In short, lesson study has 3 main parts: PLAN, DO, AND SEE. This community service was conducted in SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta from January until February 2019 and the object of this program was the teachers in SMA Muhammdiyah 4 Yogyakarta.
This community service has several steps, such as input session, training session, forming group of teacher who was selected to follow lesson study activity, arranging the lesson study (plan, do, see), and monitoring and evaluation. The input session was conducted in order that the lecturers can share about lesson study. In the next step, training session, teacher were given some documents about lesson study. Then next session was forming the groups. There were 10 teachers who joined this program who were divided into 2 group. After that, the teachers made a lesson plan which invoked 3 part that was plan, do and see. After the program, students of teachers who implemented lesson study showed their increasing interest in the classroom and more motivated to do their task. The last session was monitoring and evaluation. Monitoring was aimed at ensuring that there were no obstacle in the lesson study and evaluation session was to know whether the lesson study was effective or not.
Eko Purwanti, Ph.D., the coordinator of the community service program shared her hope, “I hope that all participating teachers will keep implementing lesson study as a part of their independent professional development. They will understand lesson study while they are doing it. It’s impossible to understand lesson study without doing it.”
